Kamado Joe Built a Better Kamado. We Know How to Clean It.
When Kamado Joe entered the market, they looked at everything the Big Green Egg did right — and fixed everything it didn't. The Divide & Conquer cooking system. The Air Lift Hinge that makes the lid feather-light. The Kontrol Tower top vent with precise airflow adjustment. The SloRoller hyperbolic smoke chamber that eliminates hot spots.
Kamado Joe owners tend to be enthusiasts who use every feature. They're doing multi-zone cooks with the Divide & Conquer at two different levels. They're using the SloRoller for low-and-slow and removing it for high-heat searing. They're baking bread on deflector plates and smoking fish on the upper rack.
All that versatility means more accessories to clean, more surfaces collecting buildup, and more components that need specialized attention. A Kamado Joe isn't a set-it-and-forget-it grill — and neither is its maintenance.
What Makes Kamado Joe Cleaning Unique
The Kamado Joe shares DNA with other kamado grills, but its proprietary components require specific knowledge:
The Divide & Conquer System. Multiple cooking levels with removable half-moon grates and heat deflectors. Each piece accumulates grease and carbon independently. We clean every rack, grate, and deflector at every level — not just the one you use most.
The SloRoller. This hyperbolic smoke chamber insert sits above the fire and distributes heat and smoke evenly. It's brilliant when clean and problematic when coated in creosote. Thick creosote on the SloRoller blocks the smoke channels and defeats its purpose. We clean it thoroughly without damaging the ceramic coating.
The Air Lift Hinge. Kamado Joe's counterbalanced hinge lets you open a 100+ pound lid with one finger. The mechanism is mostly maintenance-free, but grease and moisture can affect the pivot points over time. We clean around the hinge and check its operation.
The Kontrol Tower. The top vent is precision-machined for fine airflow control. When it gets caked with creosote and ash, the sliding mechanism binds. We disassemble, clean, and reassemble it so it moves freely.
The Deep Clean
Every Kamado Joe cleaning includes all the standard kamado procedures — firebox ash removal, interior wall brushing, gasket inspection, bottom vent service — plus Kamado Joe-specific items:
- Divide & Conquer racks and deflectors at every level
- SloRoller ceramic insert cleaning
- Kontrol Tower disassembly and cleaning
- Ash tool and ash drawer service (Classic III and newer)
- All cast iron, stainless, and ceramic cooking surfaces
- Band and hinge system inspection
- Full temperature control test at 225 and 500+ degrees
We test at both ends of the temperature spectrum because that's how Kamado Joe owners actually cook — low and slow AND high and fast.
Classic vs. Big Joe
The Classic (18-inch) is the sweet spot for most families. Enough room for a whole chicken and sides, manageable size, and all the features. Cleaning time is typically 60-75 minutes.
The Big Joe (24-inch) is a beast. Competition-level capacity with room for multiple briskets. The larger interior means more surface area for creosote and a bigger firebox that holds more ash. Cleaning time is 75-90 minutes.
Both get the same meticulous attention. The Big Joe just takes a little longer.
Pricing
Kamado Joe cleaning runs $189 - $259. The Jr. is at the low end, the Classic in the middle, and the Big Joe at the top. The $150 service fee covers our trip, tools, and supplies.
FAQ — Kamado Joe
Can you clean my Kamado Joe accessories (pizza stone, cast iron griddle, etc.)?
+
Yes. Bring out everything you use and we'll clean it. Pizza stones get a gentle scrape (never soap — stone is porous and absorbs it). Cast iron griddles and grates get degreased and re-seasoned. JoeTisserie parts get cleaned and inspected. We charge our standard rate — your accessories are included in the cleaning.
My Divide & Conquer grate doesn't fit well anymore. Can you fix that?
+
Over time, heat cycling can slightly warp the stainless steel half-moon grates. If they're not sitting flat, we'll check alignment and let you know if they need replacement. Ceramic heat deflectors can also develop hairline cracks from thermal cycling — functional but worth monitoring.
How does the Kamado Joe Classic III's ash drawer work with your cleaning?
+
The Classic III added a slide-out ash drawer at the bottom — a big quality-of-life improvement. We clean the drawer, the firebox above it, and the channel between them. Ash packs into the channel and restricts airflow to the lower vent if it's not cleaned out periodically.
Is there a difference between cleaning a Kamado Joe and a Big Green Egg?
+
The ceramic cleaning fundamentals are the same, but the accessories differ. Kamado Joe's Divide & Conquer system, SloRoller, and Kontrol Tower require specific attention that the Egg's simpler setup doesn't. Both get the same level of care — the Kamado Joe just has more moving parts.
My gasket is still in good shape after 3 years. Is that normal?
+
That's great. Kamado Joe uses a high-quality silicone gasket that typically lasts longer than the felt gaskets on older kamado models. With proper cleaning (which we provide), gaskets can last 3-5 years or more. The key is keeping grease off the gasket surface — grease degrades the material faster than heat or age.
