The Grill That's Been on More Patios Than Any Other
Char-Broil has been making grills since 1948 — longer than Weber, longer than anyone else in the backyard cooking game. They invented the first charcoal grill with an adjustable fire grate and the first electric outdoor grill. If you grew up grilling in Pennsylvania, chances are the first grill you ever saw was a Char-Broil.
Today, Char-Broil is the brand you see at every Home Depot and Lowe's in Berks County. The Performance series, the Signature series, the Commercial series — they're dependable, reasonably priced, and they do what they're supposed to do. Millions of burgers have been flipped on Char-Broil grates across this country.
The problem? Because Char-Broils are so affordable, people tend to think of them as disposable. "I'll just buy a new one when this gets too dirty." That's a waste of money and a waste of a perfectly functional grill. A $250 Char-Broil with a $150 cleaning has years of life left. Way smarter than buying another $250 grill and starting the cycle over.
TRU-Infrared: Great Technology, Specific Cleaning Needs
Char-Broil's TRU-Infrared cooking system is their premium feature — a radiant heat emitter plate that sits between the burners and the cooking grates. It eliminates flare-ups, reduces hot spots, and produces incredibly even heat.
When it's clean.
When it's dirty? The emitter plate gets coated with baked-on grease that blocks the infrared radiation. You lose the even heating. You start getting flare-ups again (the very thing TRU-Infrared was supposed to prevent). And the grease buildup on the plate becomes a fire risk.
Cleaning TRU-Infrared emitter plates requires care — they're designed to allow grease to pass through specific channels, and aggressive scraping can damage those channels. We clean them properly, preserving their function while removing all the buildup.
What We Clean on Every Char-Broil
Whether you have a basic Performance 2-burner or a loaded Commercial 4-burner, every cleaning includes:
- All burner tubes — port clearing and flame pattern testing
- TRU-Infrared emitter plates (if equipped) — specialized cleaning
- Cooking grates — porcelain, cast iron, or stainless steel
- Firebox interior degreasing and carbon scrape
- Grease tray and catch pan cleanout
- Ignition system testing (piezo or electronic)
- Gas connections inspection
- Exterior and side shelf cleaning
- Cabinet or cart area wipe-down
- Wheels and caster cleaning
- Full performance and leak test
For models with side burners, the side burner gets its own cleaning — cap, burner ring, drip area, and igniter.
Why Char-Broil Owners Wait Too Long
We'll be honest: Char-Broil owners are the most likely to put off grill cleaning. It's a psychology thing. When you spend $2,000 on a Big Green Egg, you treat it like an investment. When you spend $300 on a Char-Broil, you treat it like an appliance. And nobody deep-cleans their toaster.
But your Char-Broil isn't a toaster. It's a cooking instrument that handles food your family eats. Grease buildup harbors bacteria. Carbon flakes fall onto food. Clogged burners create uneven cooking. And old grease fires are no joke — they don't care what brand grill they're burning.
Give your Char-Broil the same respect you'd give any tool that feeds your family. Book a cleaning.
Pricing
Char-Broil cleaning runs $129 - $249 depending on model and size. Basic 2-burner Performance models start at $129. Commercial-series and large 4+ burner models with TRU-Infrared are at the higher end. The $150 service fee covers our trip and supplies.
FAQ — Char-Broil
My Char-Broil igniter clicks but won't light. Can you fix that?
+
Often, yes. The most common cause is grease or carbon around the igniter tip preventing spark-to-gas contact. We clean the igniter electrode and the burner port near it. If the igniter module itself has failed (electronic igniters wear out over time), we'll let you know — replacements are inexpensive and easy to install.
How do I clean the TRU-Infrared plates between professional cleanings?
+
After each cook, while the grill is still warm, close the lid and turn burners to high for 10 minutes. This burns off surface residue. Then let it cool and gently brush the plates with a soft brass brush (not a stiff wire brush). Never scrape TRU-Infrared plates with a metal tool — you'll damage the channels. For deep cleaning, that's where we come in.
My Char-Broil is only 2 years old but the firebox is already rusting. Is that normal?
+
Unfortunately, yes. Many Char-Broil models use thinner gauge steel than premium brands, and the interior coating can wear off faster. Rust in the firebox is accelerated by grease and moisture. Regular cleaning slows rust progression significantly. If the rust is surface-level, your grill has plenty of life left. If it's rusting through, we'll tell you honestly.
Is it worth cleaning a cheap Char-Broil, or should I just replace it?
+
If the firebox isn't rusted through and the burners work, it's worth cleaning. A $129-$169 cleaning gives you 2-3 more years of good performance from a grill that would cost $200-$400 to replace. And your cleaned grill will outperform a brand-new one straight from the store (new grills need a few cooks to break in — your cleaned grill is already broken in with fresh components).
Can you clean my Char-Broil The Big Easy smoker/roaster/grill?
+
The Big Easy is a TRU-Infrared vertical cooker — different animal from a standard grill. We can clean it, but it falls under a different process (closer to our smoker cleaning). Contact us with your specific model and we'll give you an accurate quote.
